Meet the Maker: Moses
For those of you that have been following Amsha’s story for some time, you might already know that Moses is a highly talented jewelry artisan living on the outskirts of Kenya’s capital city Nairobi. We have been partnering with Moses for almost three years now to make our beautiful brass, bone, and horn jewelry.
Moses hails from the Western province in Kenya and migrated to Nairobi in 2006. Orphaned and unable to finish his studies, he moved to the big city in search of work to survive and also to care for his younger brother. He lived in an informal settlement and worked as a casual laborer in construction, finding work when he could. Three years later, he was offered a training and a job to make jewelry. After attaining the necessary skills, he decided to strike out on his own and start his own jewelry business.
During this time, Moses also got married and now has an 8 year old child, affectionately known as Obama (Moses is from the same tribe as Barack Obama’s grandmother). When we first met Moses, he was so quiet and serious. But once we started working together, we came to appreciate his work ethic, honesty, and the times when we really heard him laugh! His son Obama always anticipates our visits to their home and loves helping his dad when his school is on break.
