Amsha's Gift Guide
The time is upon us when our houses will soon be strung with lights and the smell of delicious baked treats will fill the air. As we turn our attention to buying gifts for loved ones, sometimes it is a struggle to find the perfect one- a gift that is special and also ethically made. A rad gift that is made with love from one's hands and not by a robot. We picked gifts crafted by some of our favorite local businesses and makers. From notebooks to jam, we’ve got you covered.
For the coffee lover.
In coffee obsessed Portland, Nossa Familia is respected for their super high standards. A 12 oz. bag of their Festa holiday blend and a one-of-a-kind mug from Wolf Ceramics, another Portland maker, is a great gift package just over $50 to show the coffee lover in your life that you get them (even if you still don’t understand how their Chemex works).
For the list-maker.
Scout Books, another Portland-based company, touts a large selection of custom-designed notebooks. Some are empty, waiting to be filled with ideas, while others give you a template to spark brilliance. We think the “Let's Do This” goal notebook by Andy J. Miller looks like fun. Oh, and get this—you can also design your own. How cool would it be to give your friends and family a gift you designed just for them?
For the foodie.
She appreciates the heck out of food. For this friend, each meal is an experience. Plum Tree Jam maker Miranda creates ooey, gooey jam goodness with fresh berries, a little sugar, and lemon juice. Because she makes her jam without pectin, the consistency is richer and the berry flavor more forward. Your foodie friend will love making gourmet pb & j to her taste buds delight—especially if you get her this sandwich set that comes with Plum Tree Jam and locally ground hazelnut butter. (Or, try my favorite, the Tayberry).
For the nature lover.
We love The Far Woods' flora and fauna prints from Portland-based artists and sisters Nina and Sonya Montenegro. They call their creations “educational artwork” and design each piece to reconnect people to nature. A “Long Live The Bees” printed flag would look lovely hung in your outdoorsy friend’s apartment or strapped to her backpack, and this sticker would make a nice accompaniment on her canteen.
For the trendsetter.
They are always one step ahead of the crowd. They wore Birkenstocks before they were cool again. Minnie & George is your one-stop shop for carefully crafted leather goods stitched completely by hand. With a “Shop Minnie” and “Shop George” option on their site, you can find gifts for the ladies and gents. If he would benefit from a toiletry bag that’s as classy as he is, this travel bag is simple and timeless. I'm crushing on the Small Cross Body Bag which looks perfect as a travel purse too.
For the minimalist.
Love. No, but really, just get them these earrings. They don’t take up much space and will look great with their plain white tee.
For the plant lady.
The plant lady is the new cat lady, haven’t you heard? If the passionate green thumb in your life has adopted some plant babies, give her a pretty place to put them. One of our baskets makes a lovely plant container to highlight her foliage.
Well, now that we’ve ordered one of everything for ourselves, we’d better get to the real gift shopping! Let’s give gifts that show our friends how much we get them, and support small businesses while we’re at it. Happy holidays! Enjoy the season with your loved ones!
